I am currently employed at a smaller hospital in rural South Dakota as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) Generalist. As a Generalist, I have responsibility to complete all levels of testing in hematology, chemistry, blood bank, urinalysis, coagulation and point-of-care. In accordance with our laboratory protocols, my responsibility in microbiology is limited to setting up cultures and other testing directly related to culture set up. During my career I have also been privileged to work in a physician office laboratory setting. In this setting, the different types of tests I performed were less in number, but I had increased direct patient, physician and nurse interactions which made working in this setting professionally fulfilling.
As I think back to how I chose to become a medical laboratory professional, I remember being drawn to the medical field and knew I wanted to help people. Finding out that laboratory professionals were an important healthcare team member who provided vital diagnostic information that allowed diagnosis of disease intrigued me and lead me down the educational path to become a Medical Laboratory Technician.
I love being a medical laboratory professional! My chosen career is exciting and professionally fulfilling. I know that what I do every day makes a difference in patients’ lives. I believe in providing high quality testing and putting patients first in all that I do. Every time that I provide a service directly to a patient, I try my very best to show the patient that they are important to me and I want them to know that I will do my best to help them to feel better. I want my patients to know that they are not just an identification or room number but an important person who deserves the very best service from me, my laboratory and my healthcare facility.
