Currently, I work as an Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) and am cross-trained as an unregistered Histology Technician at a hospital. Throughout my career, I have worked in the Chemistry, Urinalysis, Hematology, Microbiology, and Immunology departments. My present responsibilities are Referrals/Newborn screenings and Histology. I ensure that all tests not completed in-house are sent out, as well as PKU cards, and manage newborn screening reports. In Histology, I embed tissues and cut tissues with a microtome to prepare thin sections on slides for pathologists to read. I am currently planning on pursuing additional education to allow me to become a Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) so I can do much more in my current position!
Ironically, I discovered my dream career as an MLT while pursuing a different path. The focus of my original goals was the nursing profession. However, my applications were denied time and again due to my deafness. These negative experiences ultimately sparked my curiosity about Medical Laboratory Science where I was met with acceptance and found my true purpose. Now a licensed MLT and thriving in my career, I am so grateful for my journey. I cannot imagine a career in the medical field more rewarding or better suited to my interests and passions!
The most rewarding aspects of my career are being able to do what I love which is helping people, even if it is indirectly, and that there is room to grow! I also appreciate working with people who are very accepting of who I am!
